Introduction to Assistive Technology
What is Assistive Technology?
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA 2004) defines assistive technology into two parts:
1. Assistive technology devices- any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increased, maintain, or improved functional capabilities of a child with a disability.
*** However, this does exclude a medical device that is surgically implanted, or the replacement of such a device.
2. Assistive technology services- any service that directly assists a child with a disability in the selection, acquisition, or use of an assistive technology device.
