Composing Written Material
In the book Assistive Technology in the Classroom by Amy Dell et al. there is mention of the writing process which includes five steps for writing. Those steps are:
- Prewriting- This is the planning stage of writing.
- Drafting- This is when the author writes based on what was planned.
- Reviewing- After writing the draft must be review by a peer or teacher.
- Editing- After the writing is reviewed the author must edit their work.
- Sharing/Publishing- After several drafts, reviews, and edits the final product is ready to be shared with others.

Low Tech Tools:
- Graphic organizers are a great and simply way for a student to organize his/her thoughts before beginning to write.
- Another simple low tech tool for writing is to have picture supports to write from or about.

Mid Tech Tools:
- When composing written material having a pocket dictionary or thesaurus can be helpful when the need new words for their writing. One can be purchase at Amazon.com.
- Word prediction software is also a useful writing tool for students that are physically disabled. There is a free word prediction software available here.

High Tech Tools:
- Software such as Microsoft Powerpoint is useful for an alternate expression of ideas. Students can write but they can also use pictures to get ideas across.
- Microsoft Word is also useful for writing. The software has a built in spell check, dictionary, and thesaurus. The software also has review and editing functions that the teacher can use to visually show the student what he/she needs to correct.
