High Tech Communication Tools
Being able to communicate is essential to success in school and in the work place according to Dell, Newton, and Petroff. Being understood is also critically important. There are two areas of communication; augmentative communication and hearing assistive technology.
Augmentative Communication helps students who cannot speak.
Hearing Assistive Technology helps students who cannot hear.

For students that have problems with hearing there are new surgicial procedures that can help. They can have a cochlear implant put into their ear which will help them to hear. Teachers can then wear microphones that transmit to the implant directly.

For students that do not speak there are devices that generate speech for them. One such device is the Dyna Write 2.0. This device is simple to use and is the format of a keyboard. The student can type whatever he/she would like to communicate and the device will speak it aloud.
